In spite of what some of us may think, Carencro High School has not always been at its present location. In earlier days, there was not a public school in Carencro. If you wanted to attend school, your parents had to provide a private tutor for you. Those who wanted a higher education had to go either to New Orleans or to another state. But, in 1874, a small, one room school house was built on the Melchior Farm; this was known as the Carencro School. After this, the Carencro School was moved twice. First, it was moved to the lot where the Fire Bell would later stand. Because of drainage problems, it was moved a second time to the site of what is now Carencro Middle School. In 1899, a second story was added to the public school. Then, in 1927, Carencro Elementary added another brick building and three small frame buildings. One building was to serve as the High School and the other as the Elementary school. In 1969, construction began on the present day Carencro High School. Through the years, buildings and sites have been added to form what you now know as Carencro High School.
