Carencro High School Weekly Bulletin

August 18 – 25, 2008

Teacher of the Year: Linda Gibson

“Students will respect all people, including themselves, and all property, including their own, at all times.”

I want to thank and congratulation you on a very smooth opening.  Your patience has been appreciated as we have made a few changes to the master schedule.  All schedule changes will be completed by Wednesday of this week.  We will be dropping no shows and adding new students as quickly as we can.

Robert DeBruyn, author of The First Sixty Days of Teaching, states that there should be one dominate rule that should be a common focus for all other rules, practices, and procedures.  The rule is simple and this will be our fourth year of embracing “respect”.  It states:  “Students will respect all people, including themselves, and all property, including their own, at all times.”  It focuses on positive self-discipline and ties in nicely with our Bear Code.  Try to follow these five classroom management principals:

1)       Classroom rules should serve both the students and learning and not be teacher-centered.

2)       There should be no more than five posted rules.

3)       Rules should be positive rather negative statements.

4)       Classroom rules need to be concise and easily understood.

5)       Enforce the rules in a fair and consistent manner.

August Faculty Meeting:  The monthly full hour meeting will be Monday, August 25th at 2:30 p.m. in the Little Theater.  There will be a brief meeting during your planning period Monday, August 18th to discuss dress code and class balancing.

The topics at the August 25th faculty meeting will include Positive Behavior Support, 504 modifications, special education modifications, and announcements.

CHS Tardy Policy:  Teachers are to be visible in the hallways during passing bells and greet students at the door.  When the tardy bell rings, move into your classroom and close the door.  Students who are tardy are to be admitted and the tardy noted in your roll book.  Address the tardy with the student at an appropriate time.  If the student is tardy a second time, it would be a positive step on your part to contact the parent and make the parent aware of the tardiness.  If the student is tardy to your class for a third time, admit the student to class and complete a tardy referral slip, noting the dates of tardiness.  Place the referral slip in the appropriate grade administrator’s door box and the administrator will call the student to the office.  The grade level administrators are:  Mr. Lutgring for 9th grade, Mrs. Castille for 10th and Mrs. Sampy for 11th and 12th graders.

XEROX Machines:  All teachers have been allotted 3000 copies per machine per semester.  If you feel there is a need to increase the amount, please confer with me, Ms. Rath.

Teachers’ Work Day:  The teacher’s regular work day begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m.  There is a sign-in sheet for you to initial your presence.  This is used when there is a discrepancy in attendance reporting.  Teachers are expected to stay for professional development activities, such as department and grade level meetings, faculty meetings and professional trainings.  If a need arises and you must leave campus during your planning period to address school-related business, you will need to sign out and have an administrator initial that you have permission.  If the reason for leaving is not school-related, speak with me, Ms. Rath or enter your partial day of absence in the SEMS attendance network.  You cannot leave during your instructional time without obtaining a substitute and securing an administrator’s permission.
